500 Most Common Words in Anime | Learn to Speak Japanese With Anime

Learn Japanese Through Anime With This List of The Most Common Anime Words

When I started learning Japanese I discovered the 80/20 principle and found out that the most common words in any language make up the majority of what’s said and written on a daily basis. At the time I found a source of the most common 50 words in anime and a common word list for Japanese newspapers.

However, what I really wanted was a longer list of the most common words in anime to help me start to understand my favourite shows. At the time such a list didn’t exist and I gave up searching for one. Luckily for you though, I’ve since made my own list for the beginners out there who are starting to learn Japanese through anime. Woo! ๐Ÿ˜€

There’s a list of shows that I used at the very bottom of this post but to sum it up, I took 671 episodes of various anime and ran some word frequency tests on them.

This is the result.

A list of the most common 500 anime words.

The list contains each keyword as well as at least 1 reading in a separate column, and it also contains the frequency that the word appeared within the texts.

There where also a lot of words, names and places that are specific to the shows that I used to create this list. As these words aren’t useful to you unless you are watching that particular show, I decided that it was best to remove them. There is a possibility I missed some.

Also, if you are looking into learning kanji then I highly recommend the Remembering the Kanji series by James Heisig which I got from Amazon for a decent price when I first started learning Japanese.

You can download the list of the most common 500 words from the links below for Excel and in PDF format.

I used a piece of software called EKwords to generate this list. One thing to note is that it seems to ignore any simple hiragana words, for example ใฉใ“. These tend to be really basic words though and can be learned easily without too much active studying.

How to Use This List

Why Vocabulary Lists Suck by Themselves

Vocab lists are in general, very boring resources. You are forced to go through each word while learning the meaning outside of context and usually with nothing more than just a direct translation. This is super inefficient (no context = extremely hard to learn).

Learn Words in Sentences

Some people feel the same about sentences, however, I absolutely love them and I really enjoy doing sentence flashcards in Anki. They are more interesting, contain more context (easier to learn) and are sentences I actually want to be able to use. I would advise learning native sentences over vocab drills any day.

How to Use Vocab Lists to Your Advantage

I like to add words to a separate deck in Anki ready for me to find a sentence later (only if I donโ€™t have a decent sentence). Now, you could do this with this list and then run through the deck one at a time, finding sentences that contain the word and that are easy enough for you to understand. To do this you would probably want to have a large supply of sentences at your disposal.

I recommend you use a Sentence Bank which you can make in Anki by converting your favourite TV shows and films to Anki flashcard decks or by simply importing texts straight into Anki. You can also google the word and find a sentence, or even use something like Microsoft Word or Notepad++ to search texts for sentences that contain the word you wish to learn.

Advantages of this method:

  • Quickly learn the most common words in anime and Japanese.
  • Get contextual information to aid memorization.
  • Using Anki means you’re less likely to forget the words (Anki is an SRS).
  • Due to the 80/20 principle, this method is incredibly efficient for beginners of the language.

Disadvantages:

  • If you don’t have a large supply of interesting sentences then you may be limited to sentences that you have no interest in (making them harder to learn).
  • You are going to have to go out and search for sentences for each word (at the beginning this can be very hard and can take time).

Here are some of my favorite tools and sites for learning Japanese

Thank you for reading this blog post, which I hope you found useful for learning Japanese. Here are some of the most useful websites that I’ve found for finding Japanese content to use for immersion as well as some really useful learning tools to help you through your Japanese studies. Some of these are affiliate links which just means that if you decide to use these sites by clicking the following links, then I will earn a commission. But honestly speaking, these are the sites that I use and recommend language learners, even my friends, to use anyway.

Anki Tools: To get started, I really like Migaku for Anki. By itself, Anki is already a super useful tool for language learners but Migaku allows for integration with websites like YouTube and Netflix, allowing it’s users to create flashcards from the shows and videos that they are watching, as they are watching them. If you use my link you can get an extra month for free.

Speaking Practice: For this I absolutely love iTalki. There are thousands of Japanese teachers on the platform that are available at all times of the day to have conversations with you, in Japanese. Some teachers take a more traditional approach while others are just there to chat, these are the ones I would recommend if you are looking to improve your conversational Japanese. Lessons start from just $5 and there’s no long term commitment, I highly recommend them.

Immersion: I’ve used a lot of different earphones / headphones over the years but by far the one that has come out on top is the NENRENT S570. This is a singular in-ear earphone that matches your skin tone to keep it discrete, meaning you can listen to the language you are learning while at work, or school. For a full list of tools and gadgets I recommend for maximizing your immersion time, check out this blog post.
